History and Food Culture in Mallorca – A Sensual Journey Through Time
(Duration: 4 hours, price 50 euros per person, incl. lunch and drinks)
Join us for a sensual and educational experience, where we delve into Mallorca’s rich food cultural heritage. On this historical walk through the island’s culinary landscape, we explore how food and raw materials have shaped the lives of Mallorcans through the centuries – from the Moors’ sophisticated irrigation and spices to the Christian conquerors’ bread, wine and olive oil.
We move through terraced landscapes, where old olive trees still bear fruit, and see how old cultivation methods and local varieties – such as ‘ramallet’ tomatoes, ‘xeixa’ wheat and ‘sobrassada’ sausages – tell of poverty, survival and celebration.
We also delve into the history behind Es Firo (the Pirate Festival), which is still held.
Along the way, we will prepare a lunch from the past together with ingredients that include freshly baked ‘pa moreno’ (brown country bread) with local olive oil and dried fig, or sheep’s cheese with almond and honey – all produced with methods that can be traced back several hundred years.
We visit historical sites, old mills and small local producers, and we explore how climate, geography and cultural exchange have shaped the island’s food.
At the same time, we reflect on how traditional Mallorcan food culture is part of a globalized world today – and why it still matters.
There is also the opportunity to visit one of Mallorca’s oldest buildings with over 500 years of history with charming corners, traditional atmospheres – and experience the Arab garden.
